vanilla extract in a jar

Homemade Vanilla Extract

Here is an easy way to replace your store bought, synthetic vanilla with homemade vanilla extract. It is pure goodness! It only takes 2 simple ingredients and time (and patience!) until you can enjoy it or gift it to your favorite bakers!
Total Time 90 days

Equipment

  • 1 jar 16 ounces

Ingredients

  • 12 vanilla beans
  • 16 ounces vodka or bourbon, brandy, rum

Instructions

  • 1. Cut the vanilla beans lengthwise to expose the tiny vanilla seeds.
  • 2. Place them in a clean jar. Cut them down if they are too long.
  • 3. Pour vodka over the vanilla beans, making sure they are submerged. It helps to use a funnel here.
  • 4. Close the lid and shake at least once a week. Store in a dark, cool place.
  • 5. Enjoy vanilla as early as 3 months after making. This can be strained and placed into small jars for gifting. Or you can keep using it directly out of the jar. Keep adding more vodka to keep getting more vanilla.

Notes

These can be put into cute jars with labels as a great gift idea. This tastes so much better than imitation vanilla from the store.
