Pumpkin seeds and pulp

Have you ever had a perfect pumpkin and wanted one like that every year? Do you have a favorite pumpkin that you want to keep growing year after year? You can with pumpkin seed saving. It is super easy and fun enough that my kids even like to help me do it! There are a few steps to do it correctly so you can plant your favorites year after year!

Saving Pumpkin Seeds

Here is the process of saving seeds. First, begin by removing the pulp. This step is super easy if the kids are carving pumpkins anyway.

Then, you will want to separate the seeds from the pulp as best as you can. Place those seeds in a colander and rinse well.

Select the biggest and best looking seeds that you can. A rule of thumb is to try to save three times the amount of seeds than you plan to plant for next year. They don’t always survive, but if you pick the best ones you can, it improves your chances.

Place the seeds on a dry paper towel. Spread them out so they do not touch each other.

Place in a cool dry spot for about a week. We put ours on top of a cupboard where they can’t get knocked over by a flying football or running child.

Once they are dry, store them in an envelope and be sure to mark any special characteristics about the pumpkin seeds and what year they came from.

I hope you enjoy the process of pumpkin seed saving as much as we do! Let me know!
