My kids LOVE granola bars, but we have been on a mission to replace store bought items with homemade. We don’t like all the ingredients in many store bought granola bars, so we came up with this healthier homemade granola bars recipe and it satisfied their taste buds for sure!

There can be many variances in this recipe, but we chose what we loved. Sure, omitting some of the ingredients could make it even healthier, but it’s nice to have the variety and we can switch it up easily! It’s my goal to come up with a granola bar thats healthier than this one!

Ingredients for Healthier Homemade Granola Bars

  • Old Fashioned Oats
  • Natural Peanut Butter – other seed butters can be used here as well
  • Honey – local if possible
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – we like like these Enjoy Life chocolate chips.
  • M&Ms – can be omitted, but we were feeling wild!
  • Eggs
  • Sea salt
  • Optional – sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, nuts, dried fruit (options are endless!)

Instructions for Healthier Homemade Granola Bars

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients. Mix well.

Use parchment paper to line a 9×9 square baking pan. Dump the mixture into the pan and press it out to make an even layer.

Bake for 15 minutes or until the edges are starting to brown and the center is done. Allow to cool completely. I like to cut in half and then in strips to make 12-14 granola bars. Using a pizza cutter makes this process easy!

Tips

  • You could add a scoop of protein powder to these to up the protein content.
  • Place parchment paper in the pan before baking for easy removal.
  • You can store on the counter to be eaten within a couple days, or store in the refrigerator to be eaten within 10 days.
  • These can be frozen. Place in an airtight container and separate any layers with wax or parchment paper. Store up to 3 months. Thaw when ready to eat!

  • 3 cups old fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup m&ms
  • 2 eggs
  • pinch of sea salt
  • Optional: sunflower seeds pumpkin seeds, any dried fruit or other nuts
